Why Is Rose the Most Important Flower in Perfumery?

Rose is the most important flower in perfumery because it works in almost every style of fragrance, from fresh and fruity to deep and spicy. Perfume rose mainly comes from two flowers: Rose de Mai, grown around Grasse in France, and the Damask rose, grown in Bulgaria and Turkey. It takes several thousand kilograms of petals to make just one kilogram of rose oil, which is why real rose is one of the most expensive materials a perfumer can use.

Here is the story of the flower behind so many great perfumes.

Where Does Perfume Rose Come From?

Two roses are the most used in fine fragrance:

  • Rose de Mai (Rosa centifolia) is grown around Grasse, the perfume capital of France. It blooms for only a few weeks in May and is picked by hand early in the morning.
  • Damask rose (Rosa damascena) is grown mainly in Bulgaria's Rose Valley and in Turkey. It gives a rich, deep rose scent.

Grasse has grown flowers for perfume for centuries. You can read more in our article on the history of French perfumery.

Why Is Rose Oil So Expensive?

It comes down to the numbers. The petals hold very little oil, so it takes several thousand kilograms of petals to produce one kilogram of rose oil.

The flowers bloom for a short season, they have to be picked by hand, and they must be processed quickly before the scent fades. All of that labor adds up.

What Is the Difference Between Rose Otto and Rose Absolute?

They are two ways of getting the scent out of the petals:

  • Rose otto is made by steam distillation. It is fresh, bright, and slightly green.
  • Rose absolute is made with a solvent. It is deeper, sweeter, and closer to the smell of a real rose.

Many perfumes also use rose molecules made in a lab to add a clean rose effect and keep prices reasonable.

What Does Rose Smell Like in Modern Perfume?

Rose is not just one smell. Depending on what it is paired with, it can smell fresh and dewy, fruity and jammy, spicy, or deep and velvety.

With citrus it feels light and modern. With saffron, oud, or vanilla it becomes warm and rich.

Is Rose an Old-Fashioned Note?

Not anymore. The heavy, powdery roses of the past have been replaced by lighter and more interesting blends.

Today rose shows up in everything from fresh fruity florals to dark oud perfumes. See how florals have changed in how luxury houses reinvented the floral perfume.

Is Rose Perfume Unisex?

Yes. Rose has been worn by everyone for centuries, and it is a key note in many fragrances made for all genders. Paired with woods, spice, or oud, it works on anyone.

Which Rose Fragrances Should You Try?

Pink Vanilla opens with saffron and rose, then settles into a warm vanilla base. It is rose at its richest and most comforting.

For a brighter floral, try Fleur Royale, our bestselling fruity floral, or Flower Intrigue for florals with a warm oriental side. All are French Extrait de Parfum that last 8 to 12 hours.
