Neuroscents: The Rise of Perfume Designed to Change Your Mood

One of the most fascinating fragrance developments of recent years sits at the intersection of scent and neuroscience. Brands are now using brain data to design perfumes engineered to trigger specific emotional responses — a category some call "neuroscents."

Paco Rabanne famously used EEG (brainwave) data to measure emotional reactions and identify ingredient combinations for its Phantom fragrance. In June 2025, Unilever committed $114 million to an in-house AI fragrance unit combining artificial intelligence with neuroscience to craft mood-enhancing scents. Firmenich's EmotiON program and IFF's Science of Wellness both focus on the psychological effects of specific scent components.

The science behind it is real: scent is processed in the same brain region tied to memory and emotion (the limbic system), which is why a single whiff can transport you to childhood or calm your nerves instantly.

You don't need a lab to harness this. Warm, comforting scents like Cherry Gourmet and Pink Vanilla evoke coziness and comfort, while a bright floral like Fleur Royale can lift your mood on a grey morning.
