How AI Is Quietly Reinventing the Perfume You Wear
For centuries, perfume was created entirely by "noses" — master perfumers who trained for a decade before composing a single commercial scent. That's changing fast. In 2019, Symrise partnered with IBM Research to build Philyra, an AI that analyzes thousands of existing formulas and market data to generate entirely new fragrance compositions. It was used to create two real perfumes for Brazilian brand O Boticário — AI-designed, human-approved.
Since then the pace has accelerated. Givaudan, one of the world's largest fragrance houses, rolled out Carto, an AI system that lets perfumers mix raw materials on a touchscreen while a robot produces instant samples. In early 2025, the startup Osmo launched Generation, described as the first fully AI-powered fragrance house.
What does this mean for you as a wearer? Faster innovation, more consistent quality, and eventually, hyper-personalized scents tailored to your preferences. But here's the thing the headlines miss: AI doesn't replace craftsmanship — it accelerates it. The soul of a fragrance still comes from human artistry and quality ingredients.
That's exactly the philosophy behind our Sélectif Collection — French-made Extrait de Parfum where technology serves the craft, not the other way around. Try our bestselling Fleur Royale or the distinctive Oud Fantastic to experience what thoughtful composition smells like.
